Comme des Garçons has built its fragrance reputation on doing things that shouldn't work on paper. Copper, launched in 2019, is a good example: a fragrance named after a metal, with metallic notes sitting at its heart, that somehow ends up warm and wearable rather than cold and industrial.
Created by perfumer Aliénor Massenet, Copper is an Oriental fragrance for women and men. It opens with a sharp, green-spicy combination of galbanum, pink pepper, and black currant galbanum is one of the oldest perfumery ingredients in existence, bitter and resinous, and here it cuts through the sweetness of the currant with real authority. Pink pepper adds a dry, crackling spice that keeps the opening from settling too quickly.
The heart is where the concept lands. Metallic notes, tobacco leaf, violet leaf, and ginger create something genuinely unusual the metallic accord reads like the smell of a coin held in a warm hand, slightly mineral and slightly skin-like. Tobacco leaf adds a dry, cured depth; violet leaf brings a cool, slightly aquatic green; ginger keeps a thread of spice running through the whole middle.
